Christian Brothers College (Adelaide)

Edmund Rice Network

Christian Brother’s College is an all boy’s Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, located in the Adelaide CBD, Wakefield Street.  The College was established in 1878. There are two separate campuses, one being the junior school (Years R-6) and the other the senior school (Years 7-12).

Our school has a strong sense of multiculturalism, with students coming from a range of backgrounds and having English as a second language.  Enrolments in 2010 are 924 and in 2011 will exceed 1040 in the entire school. In 2010 our indigenous enrolments have increased by 50% and the employment of a full time Indigenous Middle School teacher.

WINNING A HAT TRICK
This year CBC won the “Australian Red Cross City Challenge” competing against other schools in Adelaide for donating blood. In 2009 over 150 students donated blood saving the lives of over 400 people. This is the third year in a row the college has won this award.
CELEBRATING 132 YEARS
This year the College celebrated its 132nd birthday on the Feast of the Assumption. The day was celebration of our rich tradition and history and the college was enriched with the presence of Rostrevor and St. Paul’s College at our mass. The mass was followed by a carnival atmosphere and annual netball game with St Mary’s College.
IMMERSION PROGRAM
This year the College is continuing its immersion to both the Philippines and Vietnam. In September the students will be working with the Christian Brothers in the local schools on the island of Negros in the Philippines. Students also in October will be working at the Phu My Orphanage for disabled children in Vietnam. This year we are initiating a staff immersion experience after Christmas to Vietnam. Twelve staff and partners have volunteered to donate their holidays working with HIV children and support a blind school and orphanage. All immersions are being facilitated by our College Chaplain, Fr. Peter Gardiner cp.
LEARNING FROM BIRTH
CBC is currently involved in assessing the feasibility of opening a child care or early learning centre in 2011.
WORKING WITH HOMELESS
Year 9 students this year have been teaching the homeless at Hutt Street shelters how to use computers. The experience has not only been the students teaching the homeless computer skills but them teaching our students lessons in life.
REDEVELOPMENT OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL
This year the Junior School has relocated onto the senior campus. This is the first time since 1963 that the primary and secondary schools have been together on one location. Currently the College is building a new $11.5 million Junior School located on East Terrace. This new facility due to open in June 2011 will have an atrium style library, interactive classrooms and a roof top playground.
