Our History
The Christian Brothers have been working in Oceania for one hundred and forty one years. They moved into Queensland not long after this. The first school in Brisbane is now the small Chapel beside and to the front of St Stephen's Cathedral.
The Brothers were mostly involved with schools. Many people worked beside them to make the Christian Brothers' Schools very successful and influential in the development of the Oceania character.
In more recent times the Christian Brothers have become much more involved in the direct work with the under privileged in society. In this work they are joined by many enthusiastic and dedicated employees and volunteers.
The need arose to recognise these as integral to the work of Edmund Rice and the continuance of his charism. To this end the Edmund Rice Network was formed as a loose confederation of like-minded people, who united to help each other work with those least able to manage in our society.
