May 26 National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day is Thursday 26 May. It is a day for remembering with sorrow the loss and pain caused by the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities in the twentieth century. Ceremonies and activities will take place on the day and later in the week. You can find more about National Sorry Day at http://www.nsdc.org.au/

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

National Reconciliation Week runs from May 27 to June 3. It is an annual celebration and is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, contributions and achievements. It is an opportunity for Australians to celebrate efforts to reconcile Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and to look forward to what still needs to be done. The theme this year is Let's Talk Recognition. You can find out more and download fact sheets and activities at http://www.reconciliation.org.au/

May 27 marks the anniversary of Australia's most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation's history. The 1967 Referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census.
