Brisbane, Qld, Australia
VIETNAMESE student, K'Chin, has been selected college captain for 2011 at St James Christian Brothers College in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. It is not remarkable for St James to have an Asian student as college captain. The school has a strong tradition of welcoming children of migrants and refugees families.
What is remarkable is the lad himself. K'Chin grew up in a poverty stricken Vietnamese village. As a child he suffered multiple fractures which included a severely broken right leg, which he subsequently lost. At 13 the Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children brought him to Australia.
