Papua New Guinea – Callan Services
Programme Description
Callan Services is the main Province activity in Papua New Guinea and has become one of the major health service facilities in the country. Callan works with children and adults who suffer from sight or hearing impairments. It works with the local community not only to assist those with disability but also to help train people to gain the skills to assist as well. It has done a great deal to improve the rights and recognition of those with a disability in the country, especially at a political level.
Aim of Programme
- To assist children with a disability to be fully catered for in mainstream schools;
- To assist with early diagnosis and identification of disability especially in remote locations;
- To provide community health education with the aim of preventing illnesses from ending in a disability, eg, ear infections that can lead to hearing loss;
- To train student teachers to develop skills and attitudes for including children with a disability in their classrooms, and to offer tertiary education to PNG teachers who wish to work in Special Education;
- To work towards an inclusive society where people with different abilities will be welcomed and fully catered for.
