The painting to the right was painted by Aboriginal artist William Parmbuk. It was his way of putting down his idea of how the Christian Brothers (now the Edmund Rice Network) work together with the Aboriginal people.
All cultures practice protocols.
Protocols form an important and integral part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. There are some common, universal protocols and local to country protocols. Historical factors have impacted greatly on Indigenous processes and protocols. The practice of protocols is as varied as our histories. The Message sticks featured in the centre of the circle represent the significant protocols associated with the delivery of these traditional communication tools. The Message stick bearer was given safe conduct throughout the countries of travel. Protocols were observed to gain permission onto another's country. Other protocols were practiced during the visit. One or two countrymen accompanied the visitor to ensure safe passage and familiarity with expected behaviours. This ensured harmonious relationships and responsible stewardship for all involved. Walking gently and respectfully on another's land is an important protocol.

It is important to understand that the protocols and processes I speak of are Aboriginal cultural and meeting processes. The use of these Cultural ways are tradition based. They will vary according to experiences and histories.
If you understand my ways in relation to TIME and CONSULTATION METHODS WHICH ARE CIRCULAR you will be able to wait, consult, wait, consult, again and again, and then you will HEAR what Aboriginal communities want you to do. Most importantly, you will be able to hear what they DON?T want you to do.
All of this is about RESPECT for Aboriginal peoples and their protocols and processes.
