Edmund Rice Refugee Service – St Albans/ Sunshine
Programme Design/ General Description
The Edmund Rice Centre provides Homework Help and tuition, one-to-one in a communal setting. The volunteer tutors are largely senior students from 20 Edmund Rice Schools and other schools across and beyond Melbourne. The Centre is open to all Refugees and recently arrived youth, regardless of background, race or creed. It is inclusive of all peoples.
Aim of Programme
- To provide homework help and tuition to students of refugee and recent arrival background;
- To empower volunteers to sit alongside young people who are refugees and recent arrivals for mutual learning;
- To be an independent outreach for Refugee youth and their families in the St. Albans/Sunshine area.
Target Group
- Students and youth of refugees and recent arrivals.
- Ages range from 5 to 20 years. Many are of Sudanese origin, others of Ethiopian, Eritrean, Burundian and other African backgrounds, with an increasing number of Burmese Chinese.

Let us remember that the First Provincial Chapter of Christian Brothers Oceania in 2008, named Refugees as one of its two specific thrusts to The First People and the Last People.The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is running polling stations, so far only in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. Eligible voters will need to travel to polling stations twice: once to register in person from November 15 – December 1, 2010, then again to vote from January 9 – 15, 2011. |

Edmund Rice Asylum Seeker Project, aims to respond to the needs of Asylum Seekers in Melbourne. Our mission is to help bring dignity through building friendships and supporting people seeking protection in this nation. Edmund Rice Asylum Seeker Project is an outreach of the Edmund Rice Centre 'Amberley' and is guided by the charism of Edmund Rice, the founder of Christian Brothers. Edmund Rice Asylum Seeker Project is a residual service provider, and aims to help complement current services provided by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project, Brigidene Asylum Seeker Project and the Red Cross. |

Volunteers Required The Edmund Rice Centre is an outreach to refugee and recently arrived students who experience difficulties in completing their education as they enter mainstream school. The ages of the youth range from 6 to 18. The Centre provides educational/homework assistance and support, and is open to all refugee youth. A Drop-In Centre also exists in parallel at St Albans. Volunteers can be university students, senior secondary students, or adults – young or older or retired. Volunteers are only asked to help with a subject or level with which they are comfortable. |
