Philippines
Br Ian Robertson, the new cluster leader for Queensland and The Philippines, has just returns from the Philippines and has provided his impressions on the visit. He provides this insight into our ministries in that country.
In Kabankalan, Rod and John are continuing to do marvellous work with the people there. Rod is involved with assisting the bishop to encourage, support and guide the teachers in the catholic schools. These teachers are paid much less than those in government schools and struggle with things such as basic resources.
John is working with students who have dropped out of school and is providing them with the opportunity to return to education. As well as that there is work with vocational training, providing a library to students on Saturday morning, plus numerous other activities.
Graeme Leach was in Kabankalan as well. He has been assigned to the Philippines and is investigating what the needs of those who have disabilities. We joined with the Columbans one evening to celebrate the 86th birthday of one of their men. Brian Gore was a wonderful host and has been a great sounding board for the brothers there.
Shane, Graeme and I travelled by plane and boat to Leyte to meet the brothers there. They have moved from Hilongos to Massin, renting the house that is owned by the FCJ Sisters. Frank has been joined by 2 brothers from India – Theo and Roshan. They will be investigating over the next few months, ways in which they might be involved in the local community using the community development model.
It is easy to forget the issues that our brothers in distant places are faced with – whether it be the Philippines, Timor Leste, Africa or even those places far from Brisbane. I know that we receive regular communications from OPC etc but maybe taking a personal approach to a member in one of these places is something that we might consider.
