EDMUND RICE CAMPS TASMANIA
OUR MISSION
"In the spirit of Edmund Rice, we empower our leaders and participants in a fun and safe environment of challenge, development and growth!"
Edmund Rice Camps Tasmania is a volunteer charitable organisation that works to provide opportunities for recreation, challenge and growth to young Tasmanians for whom there would otherwise be no such opportunities.
What We Do
We have run camps and programs that provide opportunities for participants aged between 8 and 15 years to share new experiences with volunteer leaders aged 16 and older.
Edmund Rice Camps have given many participants their first experience of camping out over night, swimming at the beach, canoeing, abseilling, bushwalking, even going to the cinema or telling jokes around a campfire. The camps promote interaction between leaders and participants, which provides an opportunitiy for the development of friendship and trust. Our participants and leaders learn a little about themselves, about people and about life.
WHO ARE OUR PARTICIPANTS AND LEADERS?
The participants on an Edmund Rice Camp come from diverse backgrounds and situations, but all benefit from an involvement with the camps. Participants are invited to attend Edmund Rice Camps based on referrals from a range of sources including schools, government agencies and other organisations. Referrals arise in a variety of circumstances. These may include social, economic or emotional hardship. Alternatively, our participants may simply benefit from a break in their normal lives.
The leaders on our camps are young adults from the community who support the ethos of Edmund Rice Camps and who generously volunteer their time and talents to guide and support our programs and participants.
An Edmund Rice Camp provides an opportunity for growth for all those involved.
Our History
Edmund Rice Camps began in Tasmania in 1985 and will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2010. It has a rich and strong history, coming out of current and past Edmund Rice Schools such as St Virgil's College Hobart & Austin's Ferry, St Patrick's College Launceston and St Brendan Shaw College Devonport
