FAME - Flexible Accredited Meaningful Education
FAME seeks to provide a comprehensive and professional alternative educational service to assist young people reach their maximum educational potentials.
The service is supported by a team of specialist professional workers who are passionate and committed to ensuring quality alternative educational service delivery to all young people. We are guided by the Edmund Rice philosophy and Humanitarian principals of Social Justice, Human Rights, Equity and Access, and we continue to develop Best Practice Standards in support of the service requirements.
Our aim is to deliver an open and inclusive service; we are accountable for what we do and how we do it and invite our participants and their parents/guardians to engage in this process.
The FAME service works in partnership with the South Australian Department of Education and Child Services (DECS), the Catholic Education Office, Christies Beach High School, Open Access College, Indigenous Services, Families SA and a range of NGO services to provide an accredited alternative educational service for young people. It also receives significant financial and ‘in kind’ support from the Christian Brothers Oceania Province.
In recognising educational marginalisation, which occurs as a result of many complex and interacting factors, the FAME Program focuses on THREE key areas:
Education
Difficulties with school work (particularly literacy & numeracy) or problems operating within an institutional school setting (social isolation, being bullied, lack of interest in learning educational content)
Psycho-Social
Difficulties within their family/living and social environment (poverty, discrimination, substance abuse, unemployment and lack of self-worth)
Vocational
Difficulties in envisaging and engaging with future career and employment opportunities.
Todd
Struggled with teachers in mainstream schools. He was also a victim of extreme bullying. His behaviour had become aggressive so he was enrolled at FAME in an effort to offer him a more suitable educational environment. At the program, he has shown great talent in the life skills program which has enhanced his cooking and hygiene skills.
Paul
Disengaged from primary school when he had taken up a carer’s role at home. Despite the challenges faced at home, the structure of FAME suited him and he has maintained an 85% attendance rate ever since he arrived at the program.
Kate
Came to FAME due to declining attendance rates in mainstream school. Emotionally, mainstream school was very hard on her as a developing teenager. Since her referral to FAME, she has actively maintained 100% attendance and has gained a traineeship. While doing this, she was also able to successfully complete year 11.
